An organisation called Youth For Vidarbha State exhorted the people of Amravati here today, to exercise their franchise in support of a separate Vidarbha state.
Ashish Deshmukh, son of former Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Ranjit Deshmukh and main activist of the organisation told reporters at a press conference here that polling would be conducted at different schools and colleges to give impetus to the statehood demand.
Deshmukh said that the organisation undertook a padayatra from Nagpur to Sewagram to create awareness about the demand on September 28 and "exercise of franchise" for statehood would be the next step in the direction.
A meeting of Vidarbha protagonists will be held at Buldana on October 15, while on October 16, rallies would be organised in Akola and Washim. A similar rally would be organised in Gadchiroli-Chandrapur on October 21.
Deshmukh cited reasons like suicide of 32,000 Vidarbha farmers, economic backlog and failure of successive state governments to do justice to the region, as reasons for demanding a separate statehood for Vidarbha.
