The party launched a three-day long signature campaign to garner people's support to its demand to roll back the hike in VAT and excise duty on diesel and petrol in the national capital.
"People in Delhi are paying much more on VAT and Excise duty that is imposed on petrol than during previous Congress rule in the state. They are spending Rs 54 as tax, on excise and VAT, on petrol worth Rs 100 after the latest hike while during the Congress rule, they had to spend only Rs 31," Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken said in a statement.
Attacking both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for increasing taxes on petrol and diesel, he said the signatures collected by party workers will be presented to them and demand a roll back of the taxes.
"The periodic hikes in excise duty and VAT have contributed to the inflated rate of petrol and diesel and if the central and Delhi governments rolled back these taxes, then petrol could be sold in Delhi for Rs 38 per litre and diesel for Rs 30 per litre, considering the sharp fall in the prices of crude oil in the international market," he said.
