Peru ex-president Fujimori in hospital after stroke: doctor

Peru's jailed former president Alberto Fujimori was taken to the hospital today, apparently after suffering two small strokes, his doctor said.
The strokes occurred over the weekend, when Fujimori lost feeling in his arm, his private physician Alejandro Aguinaga said.
Fujimori was not taken to the hospital until today, however, when tests confirmed the diagnosis of cerebral ischemia, a stroke originating in the brain.
He suffers from a raft of medical problems, including high blood pressure that sent him to the hospital about a month ago.
The former Peruvian leader, 75, governed from 1990 until he was forced to resign in 2000, when he fled to Japan to avoid prosecution.

While on travel to Chile in 2007, Fujimori was arrested and extradited back to Peru for trial. He is serving a 25-year prison sentence after being convicted on charges of corruption and human rights violations.

He is currently on trial on additional corruption charges.
In the court case currently under way, prosecutors accuse Fujimori of diverting some USD 40 million of Peru's military budget to tabloids supporting his 2000 re-election campaign.
Prosecutors are seeking as much as seven additional years in prison against Fujimori and restitution of USD one million.
Last year, President Ollanta Humala denied Fujimori's request for a pardon on humanitarian grounds due to poor health.
