Peru's ex-leader Fujimori suffers new health crisis: attorney

Peru's disgraced former presdident Alberto Fujimori was rushed to the hospital today because of a sharp spike in his blood pressure, his attorney said.
The medical crisis occurred at the end of a court hearing attended by Fujimori in Lima, where he is being tried on corruption charges.
Fujimori's attorney William Castillo told reporters that at the conclusion of the hearing, his client complained that he was feeling unwell, and was taken to the hospital.
"He was feeling ill because of a 'hypertensive crisis'," Castillo said, referring to the blood pressure ailment, adding that doctors were trying to stabilize Fujimori.
The former Peruvian leader, governed from 1990 until he was forced to resign in 2000, when he fled to Japan to avoid prosecution.
While on travel to Chile in 2007, Fujimori was arrested and extradited back to Peru for trial. He is serving a 25-year prison sentence after being convicted on charges of corruption and human rights violations.

In the court case currently against him, prosecutors accuse Fujimori of diverting some $40 million of Peru's military budget to tabloids supporting his 2000 re-election campaign.
Prosecutors are seeking as much as seven years in prison against Fujimori and restitution of one million dollars.
In June, President Ollanta Humala denied Fujimori's request for a pardon on humanitarian grounds due to poor health.
