Observing that the admission process had already started and it would not be appropriate for the High Court to interfere at this belated stage, a division bench of Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice R D Dhanuka dismissed the petition filed by a Thane-based student.

The bifocal system allows students to opt for a technical subject instead of a second language. Unlike previous years, the bifocal option will be granted at the college level this year, not during the online process.

Acting on a petition filed by 15-year-old Vaishnavi Kulkarni, the court had earlier directed the state government to file an affidavit.

Kulkarni's counsel Madhav Jamdar argued that the system might hamper the prospects of students who wished to opt for one of the bifocal subjects. Some students might have to settle with a bifocal subject that is not of their choice and meritorious students might not get chance to opt for it.

Government pleader S K Shinde argued that the authorities have already received 1,89,77 applications and it would not be proper, at this stage, to interfere with the admission process.
