Petition in HC on election of dist and block panchayat members
Press Trust of India Lucknow The Allahabad High Court today fixed for tomorrow as the next date for hearing a writ petition challenging Uttar Pradesh government's order to conduct district and block panchayats members election first and polls of village pradhans later on.
A division bench of justice Dinesh Maheshwari and justice Abhinava Upadhyaya gave the order on a writ petition filed by two persons of Bahraich district seeking a direction to quash the government order of September 5.
The petitioners' counsel Prashant Singh Atal alleged that as per article 243 E of the Constitution, election of village pradhans should be completed before its five-year term expires, hence this GO was bad in the eyes of law.
The petitioners also sought a direction for conducting district, blocks and village panchayats elections simultaneously, as per legal provisions.
