The Madras High Court today adjourned to June 28 a petition filed by the state government seeking two weeks time to redo the merit list of the post graduate degree/diploma medical courses published on May 7.
On June 16, the court had quashed a state government order, enabling the state to grant weightage marks to serving candidates in primary health centres in rural areas and government hospitals/public health centres/government medical college hospitals in three districts.
It had directed the selection committee of post graduate degree/diploma medical courses to reconfigure the May 7, 2017 merit list, except in A, B and C categories, within three days.
Seeking further extension of time, the state government today approached a division bench, comprising Justice Rajiv Shakdher and Justice R. Suresh Kumar, as a special leave petition had already been filed before the Supreme Court challenging the order of the bench.
Advocate General R. Muthukumaraswamy submitted on behalf of the state government that the SLP was already filed and numbered. The government proposed to make a special mention before the apex court on Tuesday, the AG said and sought extension of time at least till Wednesday.
The bench observed that considering the urgency in the matter, it has passed the order and had directed authorities to redo the list.
How can now the time be extended as the admissions were already running beyond the schedule?, the bench asked.
The bench acceded to the the AG's request that they will "definitely make a mention" on Tuesday before the apex court and submit the outcome before the bench.
It then posted the matter for further hearing to June 28.
