Days after a violent clash here took place between members of Dalit outfit and Hindu right-wing groups, political parties today appealed to people to maintain peace and harmony.

Representatives of the four major political parties -- the BJP, Congress, SAD and BSP -- appealed to residents of Phagwara to maintain peace and communal harmony.

Addressing a joint press conference this afternoon, BJP leader and local MLA Som Parkash, SAD leader Sarvan Singh Kular, Congress leader and former Punjab minister Joginder Singh Mann and BSP leader Harbhajan Balalon expressed concern over the situation in the region in wake of the clash.

The leaders on this occasion also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the clash.

Four persons were injured in a clash between two groups last week over the installation of a board and renaming of a chowk (roundabout) in Phagwara.
