A PIL was today filed in Madras High Court seeking to restrain the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department from conducting a 48-day elephant rejuvenation camp at Mettupalayam from December 19,where it is proposed to send even captive jumbos.
The PIL filed by S. Jayachandran, Joint Secretary of Tamil Nadu Green Movement, was mentioned before the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice R.K. Agrawal and Justice K.Ravichandra Babu, and will be taken up for hearing tomorrow.
The petitioner submitted that there was a vast difference, both behavioural and rearing methods between the elephants in temples and mutts and those in camps in forest.
The petitioner alleged that the elephants attached to temples and mutts live alongside human habitation and acquire contagious diseases and if the camp elephants mingle with domesticated ones, they will get inflicted.
Hence, he prayed for a direction not to take the 55 captive elephants from Mudumalai, Annamalai Tiger Reserve Forests and the Vandalur Zoo here for the rejuvenation camp to be held from December 19 to February 4.
