When the PIL by one VG Natarajan from Villupuram district came up before the first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar yesterday, it issued notice to 23 new appointees, returnable by July 8.
The matter relates to the order issued by the Home (Courts VIA) department, appointing law officers in various courts in Villupuram district, on May 25 last.
The petitioner submitted that 23 persons having affiliation with the party in power, have been appointed as additional public prosecutors and additional government pleaders and other such posts, without considering their ability.
Unless the appointment of law officers is made fairly based on merit, ability and integrity, the justice delivery system would be in peril, he said.
The petitioner then prayed for a direction to the Additional Chief Secretary and the Villupuram District Collector to carry out the whole selection process again in a fair, objective and transparent manner in accordance with the dictum laid down by the Supreme Court within a time to be fixed by the High Court.
