A plea seeking a direction to the government to implement the rule on installation of speed governors in public transport vehicles to curb accidents caused due to over-speeding has been filed in the Supreme Court.
The petition, filed by Suraksha Foundation, has sought direction to the Centre, 28 states and seven union territories, saying that a large percentage of road accidents could be directly attributable to such vehicles.
The petition has sought striking down the exemption granted to transport vehicles with seating capacity of eight passengers and all four-wheeled large goods vehicles above 1000 kgs and below 3500 kgs.
The exemption was granted in a notification of April 15 under Rule 118 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.
The PIL has also sought separate guidelines for a selection criteria and tender process for the approval and appointment of authorised manufacturers of speed governors by respective state governments.
