PL seeking to install cobalt isotopes in hospital filed in HC

A PIL seeking for install Cobalt Isotopes source for treating cancer, which would be expiring this month at the Government Rajaji hospital here, had been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here.
Justice S Tamilvanan and Justice V S Ravi directed the hospital dean to file a report and posted the case for hearing on February 26.
The petitioner, C Anand Raj, president of an NGO, submitted that 80 cancer patients were visiting the hospital daily for cobalt therapy.
Of the cancer patients admitted, 200 patients were given treatment at the radiation oncology ward for removal of cancer tumor. Such patients needed continuous radiation therapy treatment after surgery. The Hospital received the Isotopes source from Bhaba Atomic Research centre in 2009 and they would expire in February 2015, he submitted.
The hospital authorities had sent several letters to the Director of Medical Education and Health Secretary for procuring the Isotopes, which would cost about Rs 70 lakh.
The hospital was earning Rs one crore per year, through insurance scheme for providing radiation therapy and it should not be problem for them to install cobalt therapy isotopes, the petitioner submitted.
The hospital had not taken any action for its purchase. Hence the court should give direction for swift purchase of isotopes to help the cancer patients, the petitioner submitted.
