Punjab government today imposed a ban on playing "vulgar music" in state-run buses with immediate effect.
"Random surprise checks would be conducted by a specially constituted committee to check the use of provocative music in buses," an official spokesperson said.
Stating that Punjab government is committed to providing best transport services to people, the spokesperson said it was imperative for the officers concerned to ensure proper and forceful implementation of the instructions in larger public interest.
"Any bus driver violating the government's directive would have to face strict departmental action," he said.
Frequent use of vulgar and loud music in the buses is instrumental in fatal accidents due to distraction caused to the drivers, the spokesperson said.
"This type of music goes contrary to both the rich cultural heritage of the state and also the dictate of the state level censor board which was especially constituted to check vulgarity in the Punjabi songs," he said.
