Plea in SC to produce appraisal report of Moin Qureshi

An NGO today moved the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre to apprise it about the progress made by the income tax department in its probe against Delhi-based meat exporter Moin Akhtar Qureshi whose name reportedly figured in the entry register of the residence of CBI Director Ranjit Sinha.
The NGO, Common Cause, which is pursuing the coal block allocation scam in the apex court filed an application that the appraisal report prepared by the Director General of Income Tax (Investigations) on their probe of Qureshi in alleged hawala dealings be placed before it.
According to the plea, Qureshi has been under extensive investigation by the Director of Income Tax (Investigations) and his premises have been raided by the Income Tax authorities and several important documents and his computers have been seized by the DGIT.

In this context, the Director of Income Tax(Investigations -II) addressed a letter to the Director General of Income Tax (Investigations) on June 6 seeking extension of time for submission of an appraisal report in respect of the electronic information gathered during the raid, the plea said.
The application filed through advocate Prashant Bhushan has claimed that credible information has been received that the Income Tax department has now prepared the aforesaid appraisal report which has referred to in the letter of June 11.
"The said appraisal report goes into the details of the illegal operations of Qureshi and his dealings with various individuals.

"According to the information received from trustworthy and reliable sources, the said appraisal report also covers in some detail the dealings of Qureshi with CBI Director Ranjit Sinha," the application claimed.
