Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP) today urged Prime minister Narendra Modi to name the International airport at nearby Nedumbassery after Adi Sankara.
The parishad, a socio cultural organisation of the RSS, has sent a memorandum in this regard to the Prime Minister making the request, it said in a press release here.
The BVP had taken the matter at the national level in 2000. The then National President, Justice J V Gupta had requested then Civil Aviation Minister to do the necessary work to this effect. But the unexpected death of Justice Gupta in 2001 left the matter unattended, National Secretary, K P Harihara Kumar, said.
Adi Sankara, born in Kalady, a remote village in Ernakulam district had travelled across the country propagating the message of Advaitha and founded mutts in different parts of the country and BVP feels that he should be honoured properly. He eliminated "unethical practices" that prevailed in the society and gave proper direction to it, the release said.
The airport was a pet project of late Congress veteran K Karunakaran and his family is keen that the greenfield airport be named after him.
