Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday announced Rs two lakh compensation each for the kin of those who died in accidents in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand over the last two days.

The prime minister also announced Rs 50,000 each for the seriously injured in the two states, a tweet on the PMO Twitter handle said.

Twenty-one persons were killed and 15 injured when an overcrowded mini-bus fell into a 200-ft-deep gorge on Saturday after its driver lost control over the vehicle on Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban district.

The accident in Uttarakhand took place on Friday when nine pilgrims from Gujarat, including two women, were killed and five injured when a Tempo Traveller carrying them fell into a deep gorge in Uttarkashi district of the state.

"PM @narendramodi has announced Rs. 2 lakh in respect of each death and Rs 50,000 in respect of each seriously injured in the accidents in Jammu and Kashmir as well as Uttarakhand," the PMO handle tweeted.

The prime minister expressed his "anguish" over the loss of lives due to a mini bus accident in Jammu and Kashmir and also expressed his grief over Gujarati pilgrims who died in the accident in Uttarakhand.

"My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives and prayers with the injured. Condolences to the families of the Gujarati pilgrims who lost their lives due to an accident in Uttarakhand," he said.
