Modi handed over the pots containing the soil and water to chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu at the foundation stone laying ceremony.
"This symbol has message and strength that Delhi will always stand and move shoulder to shoulder in Andhra's journey to touch new heights," Modi said.
Striking a chord with the people, Modi referred to the famous Telugu poet Srirangam Srinivasarao's magnum opus 'Mahaprasthanam' (towards a great march) and said that he has symbolically brought the soil and water on the path of Amaravati emerging as a great city and "people's capital".
Prime Minister's gesture is in accordance with the AP Government's campaign of gathering soil and water from about 16,000 villages and also municipal wards for using them in capital construction to promote a sense of belongingness among the people.
