Citing Union Minister Maneka Gandhi's communique to states advising 33 per cent quota for women in police, NDA constituent PMK today urged Tamil Nadu government to bring in a bill in the ongoing Assembly session to provide the reservation.
"It is essential to provide 33 per cent reservation for women as crimes against them is on the rise," PMK founder leader S Ramadoss said in a statement here today.
Stressing that his party had been voicing this demand for many years now, he said the issue was also taken up in the Assembly by its members.
Although women constituted 16.86 per cent of the police force in Tamil Nadu, which is comparatively higher than other States, it is still not sufficient to handle crimes against women, he argued.
He also reeled out statistics on crimes against women and children in Tamil Nadu to buttress his claim and pointed out that the quota has been implemented in Gujarat.
"It is not known as to why the Tamil Nadu government is hesitating to provide reservation when there is 30 and 33 per cent quota for women in state jobs and local bodies respectively."
A Bill to provide reservation should be brought in during the current assembly session and passed, he urged.
