Around 50 residents of a village arrived at the Podanur railway junction here in five bullock carts and attempted to enter the station premises, protesting against the low frequency of trains on the Coimbatore-Pollachi broad gauge route, police said.
However, they were prevented by the police.
Later, the agitators submitted a memorandum to the officials seeking introduction of more trains on the newly-laid Coimbatore-Pollachi broad gauge route, police said.
The Southern Railway is operating only one train on the 40-km stretch, that too at odd hours, which was not useful to the passengers, the residents said.
If the section has to remain profitable, the railways should introduce at least five more trains, particularly during peak hours, so that more passengers can be benefited from the services, they added.
Once on the stream, the track can be connected to Palani, Dindigal, Madurai, Tirunelveli and other Southern Districts of Tamil Nadu, the residents said.
