revolutionary, nationalist poet Subramania Bharati on his 94th death anniversary here today.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy, Assembly Speaker V Sabapathy, legislators, delegates of various outfits and officials were among those who paid homage to the poet at his statue here.
A lyricist-cum-journalist, Bharati took shelter in then French-ruled Pondicherry for 11 years from 1908 during the freedom movement after the British wanted to arrest him for his nationalist writings in the magazine "India".
It was during his stay here when he composed several of his famous works, including "Panchaali Sabatham", "Kuyil Paattu" and a number of soul-stirring patriotic songs, which kindled passion.
The management of the Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam, a multi- disciplinary art and culture institution administered by the government, observed the death anniversary of the poet at the institute.
