Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy paid homage to renowned nationalistpoet Subramania Bharati on the occasion of his 96th death anniversary today.
Agriculture and Education Minister R Kamalakannan and delegates of different outfits, Tamil organisations and officials were among those who garlanded the statue of the poet near Raj Nivas.
A group of BJP workers of the Puducherry unit also paid homage at the statue of the lyricist whose fiery patriotic songs kindled the spirit of patriotism and nationalism during Independence movement in the country.
A lyricist-cum-journalist, Bharati took shelter in then French-ruled Pondicherry for 11 years from 1908 during the freedom movement after the British wanted to arrest him for his nationalist writings in the magazine "India".
It was during his stay here when he composed several of his famous works, including "Panchaali Sabatham", "Kuyil Paattu" and a number of soul-stirring patriotic songs, which kindled passion.
