The award was instituted by the Kalpetta based Padmaprabha Memorial Trust in memory of M K Padmaprabha, one of the founders of modern Wayanad and leading socialist. It was being presented since 1996, carries a purse of Rs 75,000 besides a 'gem' studded plaque and a citation.
A panel headed by novelist C V Balakrishnan and comprising poet Rafiq Ahmed and literary critic S Saradhakutty selected him for the award, Mathrubhumi Managing Director and Chairman of the Trust M P Veerendrakumar, MP, said in a release today.
His poem 'Naranathu Bhranthan' has been etched in the soul and mind of every Malayali and spreads excitement as well as pain in him, the release said.
Born in Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district in 1949, Madhusoodhan, worked as a translator in Kerala Bhasha Trust after securing his M A.

Later he became the Head of the Malayalam department in St Xavier's College, Thiruvananthapuram.
Madhusoodhan is well versed in Malayalam, English, Hindi, Sanskrit and Tamil. His works were influenced by Gandhiji, Ezhuthachan and the Indian culture, the release said.
Madhusoodhan was accorded the Kerala Sahithya Academy' award in 1992, 'Asan Purashkaram' in 2003 and the 'Janmaastami Award' in 2015, in recognition of his various works, the release added.
