A 52-year-old man was arrested today on the charge of posing as a CBI official, Cyberabad police said.
M Nageshwar Rao was arrested after he flashed a fake ID card at Customs officials of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport while returning from Vijayawada, a senior police official said.
Rao showed the ID when Customs officials wanted to know the source of the Rs 26 lakh he was carrying at the time, he added.
In a statement, Cyberabad police said Rao was passing himself off to the public as the Deputy Chief Investigation Officer of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and he had also made a fake ID.
Police said Rao had met an employee of the panchayat department in Vijayawada who had a long-pending land dispute in a Hyderabad court. Rao, on the pretext of helping this employee, took Rs 26 lakh from him and boarded a flight for Hyderabad.
Customs officials at the city airport called the police after they found on verification that the ID in Rao's possession was fake, they added.
