Police bust gang of kidnappers in Haryana

A gang allegedly involved in several cases of kidnapping for ransom was busted with the arrest of four persons in Baghpat town of Uttar Pradesh, police said today.
Those arrested include Pawan Kumar, the alleged kingpin of the gang. The criminals arrested yesterday were involved in several cases of kidnapping, police said.
The gang had kidnapped Gurmaij Singh, a farmer of Samana Mandi, Sector-5 here, which was reported on April 27, SP (Kurukshetra) Simardeep Singh said.
The accused, dressed as a team of Haryana policemen, reached the victim's house on April 23 and asked him to accompany them to police station for investigation in a case and kidnapped him, he said
Later, the accused called the victim's family and demanded a ransom of Rs 25 lakh, he said.
The family paid Rs 17 lakh to the accused immediately following which they released Gurmaij, he said, adding the accused asked them to pay the remaining amount by April 25.

When the accused began threatening the family for the remaining amount, they reported the matter to police.
A special team raided their possible hideouts and apprehended four out of five members of the gang yesterday, he said.
The accused were produced before a court which remanded them in police custody for five days, he said.
Police are interrogating the accused and a hunt is on their absconding accomplice, he said.
