Police bust gang of thieves, recover idols worth crores in Gzb

With the arrest of four persons, police today claimed to have busted a gang of thieves and recovered two 'ashtadhatu' idols and a brick worth crores of rupees stolen from a Jain temple in Modinagar from them.
On the intervening night of February 21 and 22, the accused barged into the temple and stole the 'ashtadhatu' idols of lord Mahavira and Parshvnath and the silver brick worth crores of rupees, district police chief Dharmendra Singh said at a press conference.
This morning SHO Modinagar Deepak Sharma stopped a car for checking near Kadrabad checkpost on Delhi-Meerut road.
Upon searching the vehicle, the two idols and the brick stolen from the temple were recovered.
Four country-made pistols and as many live cartridges were also recovered from their possession.
Occupants were later identified as Pushpendra, Harendra, Surjeet and Mohit, all residents of Aligarh.
During interrogation, all the four accused have confessed to have committed thefts in other states, including a robbery of Rs 10 lakh in Patiala and looting Rs 16 lakh from an SBI ATM.
One of their accomplices and the mastermind of the temple theft named Harpreet is presently lodged in Agra jail, the officer added.
