Punjab police today claimed to have busted an interstate gang of vehicle lifters with the arrest of two of its members in Malikpur and recovered stolen vehicles from their possession.
Acting on a tip-off, Shaukat Ali and Neeraj Sharma, both residents of Jammu and Kashmir, were arrested after a hot chase and a stolen SUV was recovered from their possession, Senior Superintendent of Police, Rakesh Kaushal said.
Police had laid a special post to nab the accused but when they were signalled to stop they tried to escape, he said, adding that they were arrested after a chase.
The duo confessed to have stolen the Scorpio vehicle from Mukerian of Hoshiarpur district, he said.
The police also recovered six motorcycles, lifted from various parts of Punjab, from a house at Shahpur-Kandi here on the information provided by the accused, he said.
For the last couple of years, they used to carry the stolen vehicles to Jammu and Kashmir for sale, he said.
They confessed to have lifted a Bolero SUV from here and selling it in Budgam in Kashmir, he said.
