Police today claimed to have busted an inter-state gunrunning racket with the arrest of three persons and recovery of seven rifles and four country-made pistols.
Quamuddin (28), Niyazuddin alias Niyazu (27) and Udaibir Upadhay alias Panditji (50), all hailing from Uttar Pradesh, were apprehended by a team of Special Cell of Delhi Police.
Seven country-made rifles and four country-made pistols along with five cartridges of 7.65 mm, and two cars have been recovered from their possession, police said.
"The gang procured country-made rifles and pistols from Etah district of UP and sold them to criminal elements in Delhi and NCR," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said.
An in-house study into the growing use of country-made weapons revealed that these weapons were manufactured and supplied from Rani Ka Nangla village in the Jalesar area of Etah district and later smuggled into Delhi and NCR, police said.
Accordingly, a team of Special Cell deployed informers in and around Delhi, UP West and UP East. Acting on specific information that a huge consignment of illegal weapons would be supplied to Niyazu near Shashtri Park Metro station, a trap was laid and two of the accused were nabbed, they said.
On their instance, Udaibir was overpowered and apprehended on Friday, near EDM Mall, East Delhi, they said.
During investigation, involvement of some persons of Etah district as suppliers of illegal arms has been revealed and efforts are being made to trace them, police said.
