Police today said culprits would be arrested soon in connection with the kidnap and gangrape of a medical student at Manipal, near here, as they claimed to have obtained "some leads" on the shocking incident that has triggered protests from students.
"We have gathered some information from different sources. We have some leads into the kidnap and gangrape, and we are working on it. We have formed eight teams and are rigorously working on it. We hope to crack the case soon," Udupi Superintendent of Police Boralingaiah told reporters.
Boralingaiah said Home Minister K J George would visit Udupi tomorrow to take stock of the situation.
The 22-year old student from Kerala was allegedly kidnapped in Manipal University campus late night on Thursday as she was returning to her room from the library and gangraped. The victim, who has suffered a fracture in the legs and injuries on her hands and neck, is being treated and recovering.
Earlier today, braving rain, hundreds of students took to the streets to protest against the incident.
The protest was led by Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) and various other student organizations like 'Campus Front of India' and 'Girls Islamic Organization.'
The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the persons responsible for the crime and enforcement of stringent laws to curb rapes and crimes against women.
The protesters also submitted a memorandum addressed to the Home Minister and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
