A local court today remanded six members of the Jaat Panchayat of Joshi-Kudmude community, arrested for ordering boycott of a few families over inter-caste marriages, in police custody till July 8.
President of the Panchayat Bhaskar Rakhamaji Shinde, vice president Laxman Shinde, and members Ramnath Dhumal, Bhima Dhumal, Shivaji Kumbharkar and Madhukar Kumbharkar were arrested yesterday after Anna Hingmire, who belongs to this nomadic tribe, approached the police.
According to Hingmire, his family was ostracised by the Panchayat because his daughter had married outside the community. The family was also asked to pay fine, he alleged.
Similar allegations were made by a few other families too.
Police have registered a case for extortion and criminal intimidation among other offences under the Indian Penal Code.
