Police have so far evacuated over 4,000 people in relief operations in flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir's border district of Poonch.

"Policemen have evacuated 3,193 persons and rescued 910 from being washed away in flood waters in Poonch district," Senior Superintendent of Police (Poonch) Shamsheer Hussain said.

District police yesterday organised a relief camp at police lines in Poonch and distributed blankets, foodgrains, and other food items among 110 flood-affected families who have suffered major losses in the recent flash floods.

"Local police have been making all out efforts to evacuate people from low lying areas of Surankote river and the stretch between Surankote and Chakan Da Bagh since the flood first hit this region," he added.

The SSP said the tough conditions and unavailability of air support when the flood water was on its peak level did not deter the policemen from continuing the relief operations.

"Our jawans' efforts have certainly saved many lives and minimised the causalities," he said.
