The Mayurbhanj Police has submitted a chargesheet in a court here involving the rape and murder of a tribal girl, within 17 days of the incident.
This is for the first time in the district that a chargesheet was filed by the police within 17 days of a rape and murder case, Mayurbhanj SP Awinash Kumar told reporters.
The case was pursued swiftly by the police for a speedy trial, he told reporters today.
The chargesheet was filed in the court of Additional District Judge-cum-Special Judge (child protection officer) yesterday.
A nine-year-old tribal girl of Garudabasa village under Betnoti Police Station area, was allegedly kidnapped by one Jaminikanta Mohanto (24) of the same village on June 15.
Her body was recovered from a forest near the village the next day, the SP said.

Post-mortem examination had revealed that the girl was killed due to strangulation after rape, he said.
The SP said the accused had a criminal record and was also arrested in another rape case on August 2015 by the Betnoti police.
He was released on bail some days back, prior to the June 15 incident, the SP said.
Rs 5 lakh was given to the victim's family from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and further compensation will be given to the family from STSC fund, the SP said.
