Suspected militants made a bid to snatch the weapon of a cop posted on guard duty of a Congress leader in Char-i-Shareef area of central Kashmir's Budgam district, police said today.
Two suspects, armed with a knife and a toy gun, entered into the residential compound of Congress district president Zahoor Hussain on the pretext of discussing some local issues last night, police said.
As soon as a police guard opened the gate, the suspects attacked him with the knife and tried to take away his service rifle.
However, the other policemen on duty fired several rounds in the air, forcing the assailants to flee from the spot, police said.
The assailants left behind their knife and the toy gun, while the injured cop was taken to a hospital from where he was discharged after first-aid, they said.
