Police resorted to lathicharge and arrested at least 162 activists of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) youth wing today when they tried to march to the Raj Bhavan here demanding scrapping of the no detention policy in state-run schools.

The lathicharge took place when the SUCI activists tried to break the police barricade in the high security zone and march towards the Raj Bhavan, a senior officer of Hare Street police station said.

None was injured in the police action and all the arrested were released in the evening, he said.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said that the department has taken the views of the educationists and institutions on whether to reintroduce the pass-fail system in the state-run schools.

The views would be forwarded to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he said.

West Bengal is mulling reintroduction of the pass-fail system in government-run schools.
