Alanganallur village, where jallikattu (taming the bull) sport used to be held annually during Pongal festival, wore a deserted look today with armed policemen present in every nook and corner of the village.
Police had been deployed as there was a threat of releasing the bulls to conduct the event, and tension prevailed in the village. Posters condemning the ban on the game were put up.
Residents were hopeful that the government would find a way out of the Supreme Court-imposed ban on the sport, but their hopes have come to a naught.
People in neighbouring Avaniyapuram were downcast as they could not conduct jallikattu on January 15 as the Court did not give permission to hold the game.
Residents of Palamedu village, where the sport was to be held yesterday, also were heartbroken.
Jallikattu held here used to attract hundreds of tourists from all over the country and abroad, with bulls from different parts of the state taking part.
More than 250 police personnel have been deployed, police said.
