Superintendent of Police (SP) of Pilibhit district Balendu Bhushan Singh, who was summoned by the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council over 'breach of privilege' after he allegedly failed to take a call from a legislator today tendered his apology.

Presiding Officer Yagyadutt Sharma told the House that a meeting was held at the chairman's room at 10 am in the presence of Chairman Ramesh Yadav, Leader of the House and Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, Leader of Opposition Ahmed Hasan (SP) where some other members were also present.

SP, Pilibhit, tendered an oral and written apology to the members present, who in turn authorised the chairman to take a decision in this regard, the presiding officer said. Chairman Yadav accepted the apology tendered by the SP, he added.

The state government was also told that all district magistrates and district police chiefs be informed about the view of the House, and that in future they should show respect towards the members of the House and such instances should not be repeated, he said.

Yesterday, the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council had summoned the police official for allegedly failing to take a call from a legislator.

Chairman Yadav had summoned SP Balendu Bhushan Singh after Samajwadi Party MLC Shatrudra Prakash raised the matter in the House. Prakash said he had called Singh last Tuesday (August 21), but was informed that he had gone somewhere with District Magistrate Akhilesh Mishra.

The MLC said he then called Mishra and asked him to give the phone to the SP. But the police officer did not speak to him, he claimed.

"This amounts to breach of privilege of a member of the Legislative Council and the entire House," Prakash had said yesterday, adding that the SP should be summoned and questioned.
