Police prosecutes 541 for drunken driving during spl drive

More than 500 people were prosecuted in a special drive against drunken driving by Delhi Traffic Police, during which over 400 vehicles were impounded and about 300 were released only after their owners attended a counselling session.
During the drive, which was held between 7 PM to midnight last night, 541 drunk drivers were prosecuted, 434 vehicles were impounded. Also 154 owners of the vehicle which were being driven by those found guilty of drunken driving were also prosecuted, police said.
"Besides prosecuting them, violators were also directed to attend a counselling session at Traffic Police Headquarters today at 4 PM, where they attended educational lectures and shown short films on drunken driving," said Anil Shukla, Addl Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
The drive was held at about 125 vulnerable points in all 43 traffic circles and as many as 600 officers or officials were deployed with sufficient numbers of Alcometers for intensive prosecution against drunk drivers.
"During the drive, 322 two-wheelers, 175 cars, 14 autos, 11 HTVs/LGVs/MGVs, nine delivery vans and 10 other vehicles were checked. It was ensured that all violators were provided with fresh blow pipe while conducting breath analyser test," said Shukla.
At the Traffic Police headquarters, violators were counselled by Rohit Sharma of an NGO.
Apart from it, errant drivers were also asked to sign a pledge that they will not indulge in drunken driving in the future. Educational literatures for safe driving were also distributed during the session.
Over 300 vehicles were released to the rightful owners, who attended the session and signed the pledge, police said.
