Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today inaugurated the 26th Police-Public Welfare Mela here - an event held twice every year in the twin capital cities of the state.
After inaugurating the mela, Sayeed paid floral tributes to police martyrs who laid down their lives while safeguarding the people and maintaining law and order in the state.
"The Chief Minister inaugurated the 26th Police-Public Welfare Mela at Bakshi Stadium. A large number of people from all walks of life attended the fair," an official spokesman said.
The fair aims at generating resources for welfare of the families of the martyred personnel of J&K Police, in particular focusing upon free education and scholarship of their children, the spokesman said.
He said the Chief Minister also went around a few of the colourful stalls and appreciated the quality of products on display from all the three regions of the state.
As many as 35 stalls had been set up by Police Establishment Centres in the mela, which has been organised by Jammu and Kashmir Police Wives Welfare Association (JKPWWA).
Besides the stalls, a game zone for entertainment of children had also been set up in the mela, the spokesman said.
The main attraction of the mela was the raffle draw in which prizes from luxury cars to laptops, washing machines and LCDs were presented to the lucky winners, the spokesman said.
