He was later handed over to Income Tax authorities for further questioning, a senior police official said.
Superintendent of Police (Trans-Gomti) Durgesh Kumar said that during a routine checking drive at the Daliganj railway crossing, policemen stopped a vehicle and recovered currency notes, in Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denominations, worth Rs 7.50 crore.
The person who was carrying the currency notes was identified as Shiv Shankar Tiwari.
"Tiwari said the money he was carrying was that of his farm. He was taking the money from Lucknow to Haldwani. He, however, could not furnish any document," Kumar said.
