West Bengal Human Rights Commission Chairman Ashok Kumar Ganguly today alleged that police in the state were seen helping criminals in many cases.
"Police which were supposed to deal with the crimes were in many cases being seen to help the criminals," Ganguly, a former Supreme Court judge, claimed at a seminar here.
"This had happened before (during the Left Front regime) but now it has increased," he alleged, adding, "Only solution to this is that people should come forward. It is a very difficult task."
"With the change of power, there were many changes in the governance and as a result there was increase of chaos," he said.
"Many times you will find that when women or teenagers get harassed and those among them who protest get attacked," he said.
"Wherever there is an incident of harassment of women, there should be storm of protest. Let the example of protest at Kamdani (against the gangrape and murder of a college girl) be followed in every corner of the state," the state human rights commission chief said.
