The protesters alleged police are "shielding a senior police officer's daughter who is allegedly involved in the accident which resulted in the death of a woman in Gandhi Nagar area here".

The woman identified as Roop Nagar colony resident Bimla Raina, wife of a retired police Sub Inspector, died after she was hit by a vehicle yesterday.

Over 200 KPs, including relatives of Raina and locals, placed her body on the Roop Nagar road and held a protest against "police inaction".

The protesters raised anti-police slogans and blocked traffic movement on the route.

"My mother was run over by a vehicle being driven by the teenaged-daughter of a police officer...In an effort to shield the real culprit, police have registered a case that she was run over by an unidentified vehicle," Rajesh Raina told reporters here.

The protesters demanded immediate arrest of the girl and asked police to lodge a case against her.

Senior police officials, including SSP Jammu Prabhat Singh, visited the protest site and assured the agitators of a detailed probe.

However, KPs demanded that Jammu Deputy Commissioner Sanjeev Verma should visit the area and order a magisterial probe in the matter.
