The police today took into custody about 600 government teachers agitating at Yadgar-e-Shahjehani Park for the last five days over their 12-point demands, including payment of remaining arrears of the sixth pay commission in a single instalment.
Police picked up the teachers as they had no permission to stage a protest, said the superintendent of police Arvind Saxena, adding that 388 teachers, including 63 women, were arrested and later released.
Adhyapak Sangh's secretary Dinesh Salvi claimed nearly 4,000 people were present when police forcibly removed the tents put up at the agitation site and arrested a large number of teachers.
Apart from single-instalment payment of arrears, the teachers also want 'same-salary-for-same-work' policy.
Adhyapak Sangh's state president Bharat Patel alleged that government reneged on its promise to fulfil the demands.
Congress leader and Guna MP Jyotiraditya Scindia told reporters at Ashoknagar that he strongly condemned the use of force against the teachers who were protesting for just demands, and he expected action against those who treated the teachers in a high-handed manner.
Scindia also said the BJP government in the state must keep its promise to the teachers on arrears and same-salary- for-same-work policy.
