Punjab Police today said it will take action against the Congress MLA from Guruharsahai for allegedly submitting false complaints in the run up to the local bodies election.
Without naming the MLA, DGP Sumedh Singh Saini told reporters here that the sitting-MLA from Guruharsahai in Ferozepur district had made a "fabricated story" that Akali activists attacked him on May 7.
"Police is proceeding against him for making a false complaint," he said adding that the MLA made a "purely imaginary and false complaint" to the police about the attack.
Saini said that the MLA in a written complaint to the police had alleged that some Akali activists had put a gun on his temple and shot at him, but he managed to push off the weapon at the last minute.
"A probe has revealed that nothing of this sort had happened...Now we will take action against the MLA," he said.
Meanwhile, the DGP said that police will also book the MLA's Personal Assistant (PA) Naseeb Singh, for showing "fabricated injury" on his body and getting himself admitted in a hospital.
"Yes, a scuffle took place between two groups on that day...But the MLA and his PA's claims are absolutely incorrect...Police is mandated under law to proceed against them," Saini said.
After the incident, entire Punjab Congress including its chief Partap Singh Bajwa and Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar threw their weight behind their colleague and sought a judicial probe into the incident.
