Jaipur police will re-investigate the case of a 16-year-old girl who has been selected for the coveted National Bravery Award this year for allegedly foiling the bid of two men to abduct her, after an initial probe denied happening of any such incident.
Police had submitted a closure report last October denying happening of any such incident in February last year when Maleka Singh Tak, a class XI student, fought with two miscreants, who tried to push her into an SUV, and foiled their attempt to abduct her.
Maleka was selected for the Geeta Chopra award by the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) last week and is among 25 other children who are to be honoured by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the eve of Republic Day.
Acting on a query from the ICCW, Jaipur district administration sought the current status and factual report of the case from the police.
"...The decision to reopen the case was taken," DCP South Sanjay Shotriya told PTI, adding that ACP Sodala will re-investigate the case.
The girl was selected for the award on the basis of an FIR her father lodged and endorsement of Jaipur Collector and the ICCW's state office.
"We were not aware of the outcome of the police investigation. We are verifying it," a programme officer of ICCW said.
