Police said they used water cannon to disperse activists of the Vaikuda Swamy Darma Paripalanam after they refused to heed pleas to disperse and tried to break through a cordon around the area.
The VSDP said the objectionable portion was in the class IX social studies textbook and that government had not deleted it even after repeated protests and complaints.
