An assistant sub-inspector of police, attached to the Thane rural police, died after falling into a nullah at Padgha in the district late last night.
Assistant police inspector G M Bhosle of Padgha police station said that Ashok R Nikam (52) was in a police team deployed for guarding the water pipeline to Mumbai.
While walking along the pipeline he accidentally fell into adjoining nullah and died of injuries, Bhosle said.
As it was pitch dark, two other policemen who were with him did not notice it, and found him missing only later. Villagers alerted the police about the body.
