Policemen attacked, weapons looted in Muzaffarnagar

A police constable was allegedly shot at and another injured by unidentified persons, who escaped with their weapons and cartridges in Muzaffarnagar district.
The incident took place when Constables Lakhpat Singh and Dinesh Kumar were on regular picket duty at brick-kiln near Akbarpur village here, IG (STF) Sujit Pandey said.
At around 8.30 PM, eight persons reached the spot and four of them attacked the cops, he said.
They opened fire on the cops in which Lakhpat received bullet injuries in his thigh while Dinesh was brutally assaulted with sticks and rods and he sustained serious injuries, Pandey said.
The attackers escaped with two SLRs, magazines, and 20 cartridges. Both the constables were admitted to Anand hospital in Meerut, he said.
"The registration number of the vehicle used by the criminals could not be traced. Five teams have been constituted under the supervision of SSP Muzaffarnagar," he said.

Two cartridges of .32 bore were recovered from the spot, he said, adding, efforts are on to nab the accused.
Meanwhile, BJP alleged that law and order situation has collapsed in Uttar Pradesh.
"While on one hand ATMs are being looted, on the other police is being targeted for weapons," UP BJP spokesperson Vijay Bahadur Pathak alleged.
As many as 622 cases of attack on policemen were recorded while there were many more in which FIRs were not lodged, he said.
