A probationary DSP and two other policemen were injured when some villagers allegedly attacked them with sticks after they nabbed two persons transporting illicit liquor in Andhra Pradesh's Mahabubnagar district in the early hours today, police said.
Acting on an information that "illicit" liquor was being transported, probationary DSP Sheikh Masum Basha and two policemen went to Alipur village and apprehended two persons, they said.
In the meanwhile, a group of around 20 persons from a nearby Tanda (hamlet) stopped the police party and suddenly started attacking them with sticks in which Basha sustained head injuries while the two police constables suffered minor injuries, a Nagarkurnool police official told PTI over phone.
A case was registered by Nagarkurnool police on charge of rioting armed with deadly weapons, voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from their duty and various other sections of IPC, besides under relevant sections of AP Excise Act.
A manhunt has been launched to nab the accused, who are absconding since the incident, the official added.
Basha was admitted to a nearby hospital, police said.
