Several police personnel including three IPS officers were today injured after activists of Jamait Ulama-e-Hind, who took part in a rally here, attacked them accusing them of beating up its supporters, police said.
Jamait Ulama-e-Hind state president Siddiqullah Chowdhury, however, denied that its supporters were involved in assaulting policemen.
The incident occurred outside the rally premises in Sahid Minar ground where Jamait was holding the rally.
Eight police personnel including three IPS officers -- DC (central) D P Singh, Joint CP (Traffic) Supratim Sarkar and Joint CP (Intelligence) Dilip Banerjee -- were injured when Jamait supporters attacked them all of a sudden.
"A section of Jamait supporters entered into some areas where they were not supposed to go and it was creating traffic snarls. So when the police tried to prevent them from going to those areas they attacked us. We have filed a suo-motu case and have launched an investigation," Joint CP (Headquaters) Rajeev Mishra said.
Choudhury, however, said it was done by outsiders to malign the organisation.
