Left-Congress alliance and the humiliating defeat in recent assembly poll in West Bengal were the prime focus of discussions at the CPI(M) Politburo which met here today, ahead of a three-day Central Committee (CC) meeting that begins tomorrow.
During the previous Politburo meeting held on May 29 and May 30, the CPI(M) had asked its state units concerned including West Bengal to prepare their respective review reports on the party's poll performance.
"The Politburo discussed the review reports and current political situation in the country including two years of the Narendra Modi Government," a source said.
Sources added these reports will now be discussed during the CC meeting.
The Politburo and CC meetings are taking place in the wake of the West Bengal unit of CPI(M) on June 11 making a strong pitch for continuing its alliance with the Congress, notwithstanding its drubbing.
Party general secretary Sitaram Yechury, who had attended the state committee meeting along with his predecessor Prakash Karat and Politburo member M A Baby, too had then hinted at his support for continuation of the alliance for fighting the alleged onslaught by ruling TMC there.

"We have to unite all the Left and secular forces to fight against the undemocratic attack in Bengal," he had said, evading direct reply to a question in this regard.
The state unit of Congress too had evinced interest in continuance of the alliance.
Earlier, the tie-up had come under attack from Politburo during its last meeting held with the body, officially maintaining that the decision to join hands with Congress was not in consonance of CC decisions and the political tactical line of the CPI(M).
"The Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh-Telangana units are of the view that the alliance was not in consonance with CC decisions and the political tactical line. The Bengal unit led by state secretary Surya Kanata Mishra though are for the continuation of the alliance. The issue will come up before CC," the source said.
The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front put on an impressive show in assembly polls in Kerala, bagging over 90 seats to form Government there.
The party though fared badly in its erstwhile bastion West Bengal where the CPIM-led Left Front was relegated to third position after TMC and Congress.
The Left Front won just 32 seats and Congress 44 out of the total 294 Assembly seats in the April-May election. Mishra himself lost from Narayangarh constituency in West Midnapore.
