"The proposal has been pending for some time, it has been reviewed and decided that between 3000 and 4000 personnel will be given special commando training like the Special Protection Guards (SPG)," Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar told PTI here today.
After completion of training, their services would be utilized to protect VIPs and politicians,Kumar said.
The decision comes days after the shocking attack on the Congress rally in neighbouring Chhatisgarh. Jharkhand Governor Syed Ahmed yesterday said that he would convene a meeting to take measures to prevent such incidents in the state.
Independent MP and former Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Inder Singh Namdhari survived a Maoist attack in December 2011 in Latehar when 11 police personnel of his convoy and two civilians were killed.
Besides CPI-ML (Liberation) MLA Mahendra Singh, Janata Dal(U) MLA Ramesh Singh Munda and JMM MP Sunil Mahato, some local political leaders have also fallen to the bullets of the Maoists since the state's creation on November 15, 2000.
